The Future Tense: Grammar Explanation

In Italian there is only one way of expressing the future and that is using the future tense.

We cannot use andare (to go) + the infinitive as in other languages.

Formation

Find the stem:

for –ere and –ire verbs, simply remove the final e.

e.g. vendere – vender

finire – finir

for –are verbs, remove the final e and change the a to an e.

e.g. trovare – trover

Then add the following endings:

• ai

• à

• emo

• ete

• anno

Irregular Stems

• Essere – sar

• Avere – avr

• Andare – andr

• Fare – far

• Stare – star

• Volere – vorr

• Potere – potr

• Dovere – dovr

• Dare – dar

• Vedere – vedr

• Venire – verr

• Sapere – sapr

• Rimanere – rimarr

• Vivere - vivr

• Bere – berr
